English Vinglish (2012)

English Vinglish is a 2012 Indian comedy-drama film written and directed by Gauri Shinde. The film revolves around a housewife, who enrolls in an English speaking course in order to overcome the embarrassment from her husband and daughter. Sridevi, the lead character was inspired by Shinde's mother. English Vinglish was originally made in Hindi and released along with the dubbed versions of Tamil and Telugu on 5 October 2012. It also marked Sridevi's comeback to films after a 15-year hiatus. The film also features French actor Mehdi Nebbou, Adil Hussain, and Priya Anand. Furthermore, Amitabh Bachchan and Ajith Kumar appeared in guest roles in the Hindi and Tamil versions respectively.

Before its theatrical release, English Vinglish was premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, where both the film and Sridevi's performance received positive response. Prior to its release, the film was screened for the Indian press and critics as one of the biggest premieres of the year. It received critical acclaim and several critics hailed it as a "must watch film". Soon after its release the film was declared a "blockbuster" in India and overseas.
